Eileen Ritter & Associates was asked to design a new garden center for the New York Botanical Garden—a beautiful pavilion, designed by Hugh Hardy, provided the perfect setting.
The new space was envisioned as an upscale, sophisticated environment for the sale of live plant material, an extensive book collection and garden accouterments. Seven thousand square feet were allocated for indoor and outdoor sales. Reclaimed lumber, planed to a smooth finish, was used for custom cabinetry set against pure white plaster walls. Barn red paint that was selected to warm the book department and bluestone countertops— inspired by the Garden’s natural cleft blue stone walls—stand in contrast to sleek cable lighting.
Once opened, sales exceeded expectations.
